Standing in an elegant … Read more A refined Japanese Kutani porcelain figure of Kannon (Guanyin), Goddess of Mercy, dating to circa 1920. Standing in an elegant frontal pose and holding a ceremonial bowl, this decorative export figure combines sacred iconography with strong early 20th-century Japanese craftsmanship.

Executed in the Kutani export tradition, the figure is richly decorated with dense polychrome enamels, raised moriage-style ornament and generous hand-applied gilding. Particularly distinctive is the dark midnight-blue to near-black robe, an unusual variation from standard Kutani palettes, giving the piece stronger decorative gravity.

The serene white-glazed face, lowered eyes and ornate gilt headdress provide notable refinement, while raised enamel detailing imitating ceremonial brocade enhances visual richness.

The underside bears the red “Made in Japan” export mark, consistent with circa 1920 export production.

This figure stands out for its combination of devotional symbolism, uncommon dark-ground decoration and refined cabinet-scale presence.
