This finely hand-colored copperplate engraving originates from Blaeu’s monumental atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, one of the most celebrated cartographic works of the Dutch Golden Age. The map centers on the historic city of Beauvais and its surrounding countryside, a region long intertwined with the political, cultural, and economic orbit of Paris. Situated within a day’s journey of the French capital, Beauvaisis formed part of the prestigious northern territories that supplied the royal court and the growing metropolis with agricultural wealth and refined goods. This proximity to Paris imbued the region with a distinctly aristocratic character, reflected in its network of estates, hunting grounds, and cultivated lands. The landscape depicted here is one of abundance and order: fertile fields, dense forests, and a remarkable concentration of towns and villages, all meticulously engraved. These lands were historically known as part of the “granary of France,” producing grains, dairy, and orchard fruits destined for Parisian markets. The region’s gastronomic identity is further enriched by its proximity to some of France’s most celebrated culinary traditions. Nearby Normandy produced the renowned Neufchâtel cheese, while just to the south and east lay the lands of Brie, home to the famed Brie de Meaux—long regarded as the “King of Cheeses.” To the east, the cultural sphere of Champagne added a further layer of prestige, linking the region to one of the world’s most iconic wine traditions. This refined agricultural and culinary backdrop was complemented by Beauvais’ own cultural achievements, particularly its famous tapestry workshops, which rivaled those of Paris and supplied aristocratic interiors across Europe. The map subtly reflects this elevated status, presenting the region not merely as geography, but as part of a sophisticated and highly cultivated landscape at the heart of early modern France. Decoratively, the map is a fine example of Blaeu’s artistry. The elaborate cartouche in the upper left, titled “Comitatus Bellovacum vulgo Beauvais,” is framed by ornate baroque ornamentation, while a solitary figure in elegant period dress stands in the lower left, adding both scale and a human narrative. The original hand coloring enhances borders, rivers, and regional outlines, bringing warmth and vibrancy to the composition. This example stands out for its strong impression, balanced margins, and well-preserved original color. Blaeu’s regional maps of France, especially those combining fine engraving with decorative richness and cultural resonance, remain highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. An elegant and evocative piece, perfectly suited for a refined interior—whether a classic study, a Parisian-style apartment, or a contemporary space seeking a touch of historic sophistication. Condition report: Good condition overall. Original centerfold as issued. Light toning and minor discoloration to the margins, with occasional faint handling marks. Colors remain fresh and attractive. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: This map presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or cream mat, enhancing the warmth of the original hand coloring and decorative cartouche. For a lighter, more contemporary interior, a thin black or bronze frame with an off-white mat creates a crisp, elegant presentation reminiscent of a Parisian gallery setting. Special note: This is an original 17th-century map, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The map is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
