This "Southpaw Block" is a spectacular piece of American industrial archaeology, featuring verified factory provenance. This post-WWII commercial butcher block displays its original circular "Wood Welded / Michigan Maple Block Co. Petoskey, MICH" maker's mark stamped into the underside timber, alongside the handwritten factory inspector code "300-18-8354".
The "Southpaw" Story & Industrial Patina
The nickname for this block comes from its unique, dramatic wear profile. Decades of daily, heavy cleaver work and surface scraping in a high-volume butcher shop naturally wore the block down over time. Interestingly, the unique angle and direction of the historic "chopping dish" slope suggests it may have been worked by a left-handed butcher—a rare and fascinating detail that gives the block its incredible visual asymmetry and character.
Master Restoration & Engineering Updates
The block has been meticulously restored to balance historical character with modern stability. The original tie-rods and recessed circular washers have been preserved, but the small, lightweight original nuts have been upgraded to heavy-duty industrial nuts to match the commanding scale of the piece. To structurally stabilize the decades of commercial stress fractures, all deep cracks have been filled with high-strength epoxy. The entire timber has then been sealed with premium Waterlox finish to lock in its rich history while making it clean, smooth, and functional for modern residential use.
Architectural Base
The block comes beautifully mounted on a custom-fabricated, heavy-duty industrial steel frame on locking casters, creating a stunning "floating artifact" aesthetic perfect for a high-end chef's kitchen or loft space.
Dimensions: 30.5"W x 24.5"L x 10.5" Thick Stands 36" Total Height on the custom rolling steel frame (Surface profile varies due to historic commercial wear).
*Please note: The antique cleaver shown in the photographs is for scale and display purposes only and is not included in the sale.*

All historical checks and cracks have been professionally stabilized with high-clarity epoxy and sealed with five coats of hand-rubbed Waterlox for a waterproof, food-safe finish. The steel base is a new custom artisan build, featuring a darkened patina and copper-toned steel rivets. The underside of the block is hand-branded with the Legacy Artisan Woodworks and Design maker's mark, certifying its authenticity as a signed artisan original.
