A stunning testament to American folk-art tradition, this 4 x 4 square quilt is the work of Master Quilt Maker Jean Carteen (1923–1999). Completed and signed on November 24, 1997, this was Carteen’s 48th masterwork, representing over 340 hours of meticulous hand-labor. The piece is finished with a brand-new flat sheet backing and contains medium-weight batting. Jean prided herself on her magnificent, precise hand-stitching and used a traditional overlaid embroidery technique to ensure the three layers remain perfectly intact through generations of use.
Artistry & Construction:
A "Scrappy" Masterpiece: Following 19th-century traditions, this quilt features a vibrant "scrappy" aesthetic, utilizing a lifetime of gathered prints—including cherished material from her daughter’s childhood clothing. Full Size: 88" x 74".
Exquisite Detail: Known for her signature precision, Jean utilized traditional overlaid embroidery to secure the three layers (including medium-weight batting), ensuring this heirloom remains intact for generations.
The Signature: Hand-signed and dated by the artist, marking it as a documented piece of her creative legacy.
The Story Behind the Gift: The Carteen family is offering this treasured heirloom to honor the profound impact KIDS FIRST! has had on their lives. In a beautiful full-circle moment, the family credits founder Ranny Levy with recognizing the potential in Jean’s grandson, Keefer Carteen. The support he received helped him overcome a speech impediment and find his voice in the entertainment industry, where he is currently working on his first feature film.
This is more than a quilt; it is a legacy of love, offered to ensure the next generation of children find their voices, too. Support the future of children's media by bidding on this extraordinary piece of handcrafted history.
