The Artist
James Couper Wright (1906–1969) was a celebrated master of the "California Style" and a prominent member of the California Water Color Society. Born in Scotland and educated at the Edinburgh College of Art, Wright brought a sophisticated, European architectural sensibility to the West Coast in 1930. While he is widely collected for his watercolors (held in the LACMA and National Academy of Design collections), his original oil-on-canvas works are exceptionally rare, offering a tactile depth and permanence highly sought after by fine art investors.
The Piece
This commanding original oil on canvas is a quintessential example of California Regionalism. At a generous 24-inch width, the composition beautifully captures the stark, rhythmic beauty of the rural West. Executed in a sophisticated monochromatic "grisaille" palette, the painting features a traditional windmill and rustic barn—hallmarks of Wright's interest in architectural form and structural rhythm.
The artist utilizes confident palette-knife work to create foreground texture, contrasted against a luminous, atmospheric sky. The neutral tones and impressive scale make this an ideal focal piece for Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, or Contemporary Farmhouse interiors.
Condition & Presentation
The painting is in excellent vintage condition and is housed in its original, substantial gallery-grade frame. The deep 3-inch profile and classic linen liner provide a professional presence that enhances its stature on the wall.
