An exceptionally striking pair of antique cobalt blue faience jardinieres or decorative urns, richly detailed with sculptural swan-form handles, paw feet, and hand-applied gilt and enamel floral decoration.
These pieces embody the dramatic elegance associated with late 19th century (1890s) French decorative arts, blending deep jewel-tone cobalt glaze with ornate sculptural styling evocative of Victorian and Napoleon III interiors. The stylized swan handles and claw feet give the pair a distinctly architectural presence, while the raised gilt and enamel botanical motifs add softness and refinement.
The scale and saturated cobalt coloration make these particularly impactful as statement shelf pieces, mantel accents, or centerpiece urns in maximalist, grandmillennial, eclectic European, or traditional interiors.
Though unsigned, the pair strongly recalls French faience and majolica influences produced during the late 19th to early 20th century, with stylistic similarities to decorative objects associated with Sarreguemines, Gien, and other French ceramic houses of the era.
These display beautifully from every angle and possess the kind of sculptural form that reads far more expensive in-person than typical decorative pottery.
Dimensions
• Height: approximately 10–11 in
• Width: approximately 9 in handle to handle
Condition
Good antique condition consistent with age. Some expected wear to gilt and enamel decoration as shown in photos. No structural cracks observed. Minor surface wear and manufacturing irregularities consistent with antique hand-finished ceramics. Presents exceptionally well.
Styling Notes
Beautiful styled on a console, flanking a fireplace, in a moody library, layered into a chinoiserie collection, or used as decorative cachepots for dried florals.
Why These Work
The combination of cobalt glaze, sculptural handles, animal feet, and decorative gilt detailing gives these strong designer appeal. Pieces with dramatic silhouette and saturated cobalt tones consistently outperform standard Victorian ceramics on Chairish because they photograph exceptionally well and read as “statement decors.”
