This vintage Japanese school-zone warning sign probably dates from the late Shōwa period, around the 1970s–1980s. The text reads “School Zone / Caution”. The yellow warning panel shows the silhouettes of two schoolchildren, a strong graphic image referring to Japanese school routes and road safety.
Dimensions: height 92.5 cm, width 62 cm, depth 2 cm.
The sign has a striking green ground with yellow lettering and a large diamond-shaped warning symbol. Years of exposure to weather, light and use have given the surface a beautifully worn character: scratches, fading, discoloration and softened areas turn the sign into an almost abstract visual object.
The back has two horizontal mounting rails, making it easy to hang on a wall. Today, this piece works exceptionally well as a graphic wall object, vintage signage or Japanese statement piece in a minimalist, industrial or eclectic interior.
In beautifully weathered vintage condition, with clear signs of use, patina and wear consistent with age and original function.
A rare and powerful Japanese object with strong graphic presence.
