The black … Read more This antique Japanese chest has a strong, understated silhouette with two spacious drawers and a deep dark-lacquered surface. The black lacquer has a beautifully aged character, with subtle wear and small traces that reveal the age of the piece.

Dimensions: height 54.5 cm, width 85 cm, depth 40.5 cm.

The chest most likely dates from the late Meiji period or early Taishō period, around c. 1900–1910s. This type of tansu was traditionally used for storing textiles, clothing or personal belongings. The metal corner fittings, elegant handles and decorative lock plates give the piece a refined, graphic presence. The keys are not present.

Today, this low tansu works beautifully as a compact storage cabinet, a display piece for large ceramics, ikebana or objects, or as a low sideboard in a stylish contemporary interior. The combination of dark lacquered wood, clean volume and old Japanese hardware gives the piece a quiet yet powerful character.

In good condition, with natural signs of use and ageing consistent with age and use. Solid and functional. See less
