An exceptional carved tiger’s eye quartz figure of a roaring lion, attributed to renowned Idar-Oberstein gem sculptor Georg O. Wild, Germany. Beautifully executed, the sculpture captures the strength and intensity of the King of the Jungle through the natural golden chatoyancy of richly figured tiger’s eye quartz, skillfully utilized to convey the lion’s fur and flowing mane.
The expressive eyes are set with brilliant-cut diamonds, while the open mouth reveals finely carved white agate teeth and a pink rhodonite tongue, adding striking realism and contrast to the composition. The carving remains unsigned.
This model was notably featured on the cover of Gems and Minerals magazine, January 1969, alongside a carved nephrite rhinoceros, in an article highlighting the celebrated gem carvers of Idar-Oberstein and particularly the work of Georg O. Wild.
A rare and highly decorative example of mid-20th century German hardstone carving, combining exceptional lapidary craftsmanship with sculptural presence.
