Quarter-sawn oak machinist's chest built around the Doelger patented system (July 28, 1896), combining a compact tool cabinet with an integrated clamping/workholding mechanism. The case features a lift-top lid and paneled front concealing a bank of graduated drawers, flanked by hinged side compartments. The right compartment houses a built-in iron vise driven by a rack-and-pinion style adjustment, allowing the user to secure workpieces directly from the chest without a separate bench vise. The left compartment contains small drawers and shelving for organizing precision tools and hardware, while a removable till and felt-lined drawer provide protected storage for finer instruments.
The Doelger patent centered on consolidating tool storage and function into a portable cabinet, integrating clamping hardware and compartmentalized organization into a single unit for machinists and mechanics working in limited or mobile shop environments.
