This exquisite pendant lamp, model 1636, designed by the legendary Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte in 1960, is a rare and refined piece that reflects the pinnacle of Italian lighting design in the post-war period. Crafted in Italy, the lamp showcases Ingrand’s unmistakable sensibility for sculptural form, refined materials, and atmospheric lighting. Compact yet impactful, the pendant features elegant shield-shaped reflector shades in acid-etched glass; an iconic treatment used by Fontana Arte, resulting in a softly diffused glow when illuminated. The shades display a greenish-tan hue, typical of Fontana Arte’s glasswork during the 1960s, adding a nuanced depth and warmth to the light’s character. The glass elements are suspended in solid brass mounts, hand-cast and finely detailed, into which the shades are precisely slid. These fittings highlight the artisanal nature of Fontana Arte’s production under Ingrand’s direction. One of the lamp’s most charming design gestures is the organically contoured arm, transitioning from a narrow to a thicker tubular form, punctuated by a whimsical solid brass sphere at its center. It’s a subtle yet elegant touch that embodies Ingrand’s ability to infuse rational modernism with a lyrical spirit. This piece remains in excellent original condition with a gentle patina to the brass, preserved intentionally for authenticity, though professional polishing can be offered if desired. The lamp emits a soft, ambient light, ideal for intimate, atmospheric spaces. We have matching wall lamps available. Max Ingrand, a master glassmaker and artistic director of Fontana Arte from 1954 to 1967, brought the firm to global prominence. His work merged French Art Deco heritage with Italian modernism, producing lighting that was both sculptural and functional.
