Architectural ribbed “grill” façade element designed by jean prouvé and manufactured by compagnie industrielle du matériel de transport in neuilly-sur-seine, france, 1957. This panel formed part of the insa lyon doua campus buildings in villeurbanne, completed in 1957. Conceived as an insulating architectural component, the element is executed in pressed aluminium and filled with foam, combining structural lightness with thermal performance. This panel was one of 3 sizes used in the building, being the largest size. The so-called “grill” panels by c.i.m.t. Were selected across the teaching buildings and the restaurant for their technical precision and their capacity to adapt to a modular architectural language. Their ribbed surface not only reinforces the panel structurally but also creates a subtle rhythm of light and shadow, transforming a purely functional façade element into a refined visual composition. Removed from its original context and presented on the wall, the panel reads as a sculptural object, a distilled fragment of post-war modernist architecture. Jean prouvé (1901–1984) remains one of the most influential figures in the dialogue between architecture and industrial production. Trained as a metalworker, he moved from traditional wrought iron to the innovative use of folded sheet steel and aluminium, developing a vocabulary rooted in construction rather than decoration. His work consistently explored the relationship between form, material, and fabrication, resulting in buildings and components that could be efficiently produced, transported, and assembled. Central to prouvé’s philosophy was the idea that architecture should be conceived through its method of making. His collaboration with engineers and industrial manufacturers such as c.i.m.t. Exemplifies this approach, where technical ingenuity and architectural clarity merge into a coherent whole. From post-war schools to prefabricated housing and façade systems such as this, his work reflects a humanist vision in which innovation serves both function and society, securing his legacy as a defining figure in 20th-century design and architecture. Provenance; insa lyon doua campus buildings in villeurbanne, 1957.
