Jozef Mees
Mees studied at the Academy of Ghent under Jean Delvin and graduated in 1920. After his studies, he worked in his family’s furniture business as a cabinetmaker and decorator. Despite his commercial work, Mees continued to pursue his creative aspirations. In 1924, his artistic work was exhibited for the first time, marking the beginning of his career as an artist.
Mees’ early paintings from the 1940s are heavily influenced by Flemish Expressionism. These works are animistic in nature and show monumental figures and structured landscapes, which clearly show his admiration for Frits Van den Berghe. Like Van Den Berghe, Mees managed to combine the vitality of Expressionism with an open mind.
from the 1950s, Mees evolved towards a more abstract style, marking a turning point in his career. His lyrical canvases from this period are infused with emotion and reminiscent of the École de Paris, Jeune Peinture Belge, Action painting and post-expressionism. Mees was not afraid to use matter, and light, form and content play a prominent role in his colourful, layered works.
In the late 1960s, Mees began to create more structured, balanced compositions, favouring clean surfaces and sterile line work. Although his style changed, he remained true to his distinct colour palette. His works from this period are characterised by a striking use of bright colours against dark backgrounds, emphasising his flamboyance.
Mees’ work, including the 1962 masterpiece “Abstract composition”, continues to occupy an important place in the world of abstract art. His ability to combine colour, form and emotion makes him one of the most influential artists of his time.
This particular work is in very good condtion.
