This plate originates from the important Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, issued in 1856 under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese. The composition is dominated by a dramatic central flowering spike in deep red tones, rising from a dense rosette of broad, arching leaves. The foliage is beautifully modeled in layered greens with subtle variegation and natural curvature, giving the plant a sculptural, almost architectural presence. Surrounding the main subject are smaller botanical studies, including floral sections and structural details, reflecting the scientific rigor of the publication. Lithographed by Woldfart and printed by Lemercier in Paris, this chromolithograph exemplifies the high level of craftsmanship achieved in 19th-century European botanical illustration. The combination of strong form, rich color contrasts, and precise detail makes this piece both scientifically valuable and highly decorative. This print is particularly appealing for collectors of botanical art and exotic plant studies. Its bold vertical composition and vibrant palette make it an excellent statement piece for modern interiors, especially when paired with other tropical or botanical works. Condition report: Good condition with light age toning and minor spotting. Original fold line visible, as issued. Margins intact. Colors remain strong and well preserved. Framing tips: Best suited to a dark frame such as walnut or ebonized wood to enhance the deep green and red tones, combined with a wide ivory mat for contrast. For a more contemporary presentation, a slim black frame with a clean white mat creates a crisp, gallery-style effect. Special note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original.
