Likely originating from Central Europe or Scandinavia, the piece is characterized by its whimsical, hand-carved outlines and original polychrome decoration. The bench features a beautifully shaped crest rail with scrolling acanthus-like motifs and a central pierced splat. The solid plank seat is flanked by gracefully curved arms that transition into high, slab-style side panels. The apron is equally considered, displaying a scalloped edge and a central diamond-shaped cutout. The bench retains a wonderful aged yellow/ochre ground, adorned with hand-painted floral bouquets and delicate scrolling vines in muted blues, greens, and earthy reds.
