This gilt bronze figure depicts the historic Buddha Shakyamuni in perpetual meditation. Also known as Shaka, Gautama Buddha, or Prince Siddhartha, Shakyamuni embodies the virtues of wisdom and composure and guides others in their journey towards enlightenment.
Dated to the mid-19th century during the Rattanakosin dynasty (1782-1932), the Buddha is cast of bronze to exquisite detail and painted with gilt pigments for a lustrous finish. He sits upon a tiered lotus plinth with legs crossed and hands held together in dhyana mudra, a gesture of inner balance and deep reflection.
The Buddha is cast in a distinctly Thai style, dressed in bejeweled finery reminiscent of Thai royal attire and wearing a tall, flame-like crown. This spiked crown is known as an ushnisha, and signifies wisdom and the spiritual power of the Buddha's enlightenment
