This striking sculpture reimagines Michelangelo’s classical Renaissance masterpiece through a vibrant, contemporary Pop Art lens. The piece features a substantial, weighted cast of David’s head, finished with an intensive artisanal lacquer process that bridges the gap between classical form and aggressive modern color.
Provenance & History
Acquired in 1997 at the legendary Annex Antique Fair & Flea Market in Chelsea, New York, this piece dates to a pivotal era of Manhattan’s post-modern design scene. The 26th Street markets were the epicenter of "downtown" style in the late 90s, serving as a primary sourcing ground for the city's most influential designers and collectors.
The Finish & Artistry
The surface is the result of a meticulous multi-step technique designed to create depth and texture. The bust received three layers of saturated neon fuchsia enamel, followed by two coats of high-gloss lacquer. The finish was selectively torched during the curing process and hand-waxed to achieve a unique, distressed-gloss luster. Unlike mass-produced painted casts, this piece exhibits subtle variations in texture and light refraction, giving it a distinctive metallic quality.
Styling & Context
A definitive statement piece, this bust is ideal for maximalist, eclectic, or high-modern environments. The juxtaposition of the iconic 16th-century silhouette with a neon palette offers a sophisticated "high-low" tension. It serves as a commanding focal point for a library niche, a minimalist console, or styled within a gallery wall arrangement.

Acquired in 1997, it exhibits a well-preserved hand-lacquered finish that maintains its vibrant neon fuchsia saturation without fading. Detailed Observations: Surface Texture: The surface features a purposeful distressed-gloss texture achieved through a selective torching and hand-waxing process. Any minor irregularities in the enamel or lacquer are original to the artisanal creation of the piece and serve to distinguish it from mass-produced resin casts. Structural Integrity: The heavy-cast medium is solid with no cracks, chips, or repairs. The base is stable and shows only negligible shelf wear consistent with its age and display history. Finish Stability: The high-gloss topcoats are intact and free of peeling or "crazing" (fine surface cracking). The wax finish has been maintained to ensure a brilliant light refraction. less
