Although not made out of wood as was traditional, this tray used papier-mâché, as it was lighter and better for export, while remaining long lasting. The traditional techniques were still employed, including Maki-e, the use of gold or silver powder sprinkled over designs made in wet lacquer. In this tray, gold was used to create the lace pattern on the black center, and silver, to create a floral pattern on the green trim. Likewise , hand painted flowers in vibrant colors are traditional to this craft, and in this tray they look impressive against the black lacquer.

While many trays were created in rectangular or circular form, this one has the added beauty of the oblong quatrefoil shape with scalloped edge and twin handles. It measures 21” long by 12” wide. The edges curve up and reach 1” in height.

The underside is red lacquer. At the center, the tray is marked “PATENT 101822 / MADE IN JAPAN.” See less
