about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
gaston de latenay (1859–1943) was a distinguished french painter, lithographer, and illustrator deeply associated with the symbolist movement and the société des aquarellistes français. His work is celebrated for its poetic, atmospheric quality, often focusing on the ethereal landscapes of brittany and the belgian coast. Latenay possessed a unique ability to capture the interplay of light and water, utilizing a delicate, fluid style that bridged the gap between impressionism and art nouveau. He gained significant acclaim for his contributions to l'estampe moderne, where his lithographs showcased his mastery of soft color palettes and serene, dreamlike compositions.
his artworks are featured in prestigious international collections, including: musée d’orsay, paris; the metropolitan museum of art, new york; the victoria and albert museum, london; national gallery of art, washington, d.c.; musée carnavalet, paris

from the text on the tissue paper:
english translation:
it is a conventional landscape composed within a palette of autumnal colours. Yellowed leaves scatter across the faded grass of the lawns, and the russet tone of the foliage harmonises with the gold of ripening fruits. Around a basin of pink marble, beneath the braided branches of hornbeam alleys interspersed here and there with the darker greenery of yews, the artist—enamoured with the charms of nature in its decline—has grouped young women dressed in linen tunics; they gravely give themselves over to their puerile game, launching a graceful flotilla of light boats upon the shimmering water of the basin.
