The work “Madonna and Child” by Domenico Capriolo (Venice 1494–1528) is an oil painting on poplar panel. It depicts a woman seated before a large dark curtain, delicately holding the child on her lap. Both lower their gaze and appear immersed in deep thought, almost indifferent to the natural landscape visible in the background. The woman wears a red dress and a green cloak (probably originally blue), colors traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary: red symbolizes spiritual love and blue divine wisdom. Although there are no immediately obvious signs of his identity, small golden rays around the child's head, arranged in a cross, indicate that it is Jesus. The meditative attitude of the two figures alludes to Christ's future death: for humanity it will be a source of salvation, while for the mother it will be a source of sorrow. Stylistically, the painting recalls the influence of Jacopo Palma Vecchio, especially in the similarities between the faces and the depiction of the folds of the clothing. However, the work presents a certain compositional rigidity, probably linked to the author's training and artistic context.
