This exceptional pendant lamp by mathieu matégot, created in collaboration with the renowned glass manufacturer holophane, is a striking example of french post-war modernism. The design elegantly combines industrial functionality with matégot's poetic formal language: the slender, tapered metal stem with its fine perforations creates a visual lightness and allows the light to subtly filter through, while the generously sized, hemispherical glass shade diffuses the light downwards in a focused and glare-free manner. The diffuser, made of pressed holophane glass, features the typical concentric grooved structure, which ensures even light distribution and is also a defining design element. The signature "holophane made in france 3399," embossed on the glass rim, clearly indicates its french production and underscores the industrial origins of this lamp.
a particularly noteworthy feature of this piece is the visible screw fastening of the glass, a design detail that was usually replaced by concealed plug-in systems in later versions. This technical solution strongly suggests an early production phase, around 1950–1955, making the lamp particularly interesting for collectors. The metal finish, material thickness, and internal construction also point to an early series, where functionality and ease of maintenance were clearly paramount. Overall, this is an authentic and rare piece from matégot's most formative creative period, impressing with both its design clarity and its industrial honesty. Ideal for mid-century interiors, collectors of high-quality design classics, or as a striking standalone piece above a dining table or kitchen counter.
condition: used, good condition with age-related wear. Minor paint chips and patina on the metal, as well as small irregularities on the glass rim, are present. Technically functional.
