Monumental narrative woodcut – human figures – West Africa – approx. 51 cm
Impressive hand-carved wooden sculpture from West Africa, circa 1970, composed of a complex composition of human figures.
The sculpture is carved all around and displays a layered structure of figures, which is characteristic of so-called ‘narrative carvings’ in which community, family, and tradition take center stage.
The powerful vertical form and the accumulation of figures give the sculpture a totem-like appearance and make it a striking decorative and collectible object.
