Wonderful early 20th century French paper mâché dog figure with loads of character. Styled as a French Bulldog with oversized ears and an expressive painted face, this little guy has the sweetest look and a perfectly worn surface that only comes with age.
The original hand-painted finish has softened beautifully over time, giving the piece a warm, timeworn feel. Around the neck is a whimsical raffia-style collar tied with a faded ribbon, adding to its quirky charm. It feels somewhere between folk art, carnival prize, and old French nursery décor.
There are distressed areas throughout, including wear and paint loss, particularly around the head and ears, along with general age-related scuffs and imperfections consistent with early paper mâché construction. The raffia collar also shows age and fraying. The head rotates slightly from side to side.
A charming decorative piece with great personality and a wonderfully imperfect, collected look.
