This "Artisan Block" is a monumental piece of American industrial history. Standing at a commanding 30" x 30" surface footprint with an exceptional 14.25-inch thick profile, this piece is an authenticated, early 20th-century masterpiece from the historic Michigan Maple Block Company (Petoskey, MI), dating to circa 1915. Finding a vintage block of this immense depth is increasingly rare, as most standard industrial examples reach only 10 inches.
While the original top-surface stamp was removed during the leveling process, the block's pedigree is structurally guaranteed by two proprietary manufacturing features: the exclusive Linderman "Double-Dovetail" (zig-zag) interlocking joints, and the internal steel tension-rod architecture.
Master Restoration & Finish
The block has been meticulously restored for modern residential use. Originally a nominal 15-inch thick cube, it was used historically as a low-impact prep and breaking station rather than a chopping block, beautifully preserving its tight-grain structure. Using a custom router sled, the top has been expertly leveled and smoothed to a solid 14.25-inch thickness, transforming it into a functional, luxury kitchen island. To maintain the purity of the piece, historical character marks and holes were hand-filled with solid maple, ensuring a true wood-to-wood restoration with no epoxy used on the surface. Crucially, the original deteriorated maple rod-plugs on the sides have been replaced with hand-turned Walnut plugs, offering a striking visual contrast that highlights the block's historic internal steel engineering.
The deep, sophisticated tone is a bespoke, hand-mixed Watco stain created specifically for this block to highlight the natural grain of the old-growth maple. It is protected by eight hand-applied coats of Waterlox, a premium tung-oil resin that offers a waterproof, furniture-grade finish that is both durable and elegant.
Architectural Base
The block is supported by a hand-fabricated custom steel base designed to handle the immense weight of the timber, featuring a built-in lower slatted storage shelf and heavy-duty casters for ease of movement. This is a turn-key architectural centerpiece packed with over a century of American heritage.
Dimensions: Approx. 30"W x 30"L x 14.25" Thick. (Note: Features a minor, authentic 1/4" historic variance in squareness, a natural testament to its 100+ year journey and seasonal wood movement). *Please note the cleaver is for display only. It is not included with the purchase of the butcher block.*

The top surface was precision-leveled with a custom router sled to create a flat, functional workspace. In a dedicated effort to avoid synthetic fillers or epoxy, all significant historical voids were repaired using hand-cut maple shims, precision-fitted for a 100% solid wood restoration. The block exhibits a rich history of maintenance and care. Alongside my recent restoration, the piece retains stable, historical patchwork and traditional sawdust-fill repairs from its previous decades in service. I have stabilized these areas, removing any loose material and reinforcing the character of the block where needed. The resulting surface is a beautiful, smooth tapestry of the block’s long industrial life. The piece is finished with a bespoke, food-safe Watco stain and eight hand-applied coats of Waterlox for a waterproof, furniture-grade glow. It sits on a custom-fabricated steel base with heavy-duty industrial casters for ease of movement. As a result of its age and traditional restoration, the surface retains organic character, including slight natural gaps and a softened, authentic patina on the corners. less
