about the collection (l'estampe moderne)
l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist.

the artist
émile auguste wéry (1868–1935) was a versatile french painter who emerged during a transformative period in european art. Initially associated with the academic tradition, his style underwent a significant evolution after he befriended henri matisse in the late 1890s. This relationship led wéry to embrace a more vibrant, light-filled palette, bridging the gap between traditional realism and the burgeoning fauvist movement.
wéry is best known for his evocative landscapes and genre scenes, particularly those depicting the rugged coastlines of brittany and the canals of venice. His work is characterized by a mastery of atmospheric light and a decorative sensibility that aligns with the art nouveau aesthetic of his contemporaries. Whether working in oils or contributing to prestigious print collections like l'estampe moderne, wéry maintained a sense of serenity and structural balance. His compositions often feature a harmonious interplay of color and shadow, capturing the quiet beauty of everyday life with a refined, poetic touch.

from the text on the tissue paper:
"la bretagne avec son paysage sévère, ses rochers sans cesse battus par les flots et desséchés par les vents du large, sa mer tantôt calme, tantôt furieusement démontée que sillonnent tranquilles ou agitées les voiles rousses des barques de pêche, la bretagne, en un mot, s'incarne symboliquement dans la figure grave et mélancolique de la paysanne au teint hâlé qu'a exécutée pour nous e. Wéry."
english translation:
brittany, with its severe landscape, its rocks incessantly battered by the waves and parched by the offshore winds, its sea—at times calm, at others furiously turbulent—crossed by the tranquil or restless russet sails of fishing boats; brittany, in a word, is symbolically embodied in the grave and melancholy figure of the sun-tanned peasant woman that e. Wéry has created for us.
