Originates from Xinjiang, in western China, from the late 19th century, where local pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, with carved low-relief fronts and a decorative meander on the apron. In the rural houses of western China, carved sideboards held a central place in the main room: they served as storage furniture and, through the density of the carving, played an ornamental and symbolic role within the family trousseau. The marked presence of the piece corresponded to its domestic role.Built in solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without nails. The front articulates four doors with circular iron latch-style pulls, each resolved as a recessed panel carved in low relief with lattices and stylised rosettes. The lower apron is finished with a carved meander border. The top extends in protruding lobed ends. The patina retains the warm tone of aged pine, light and luminous, with the low-relief carving defined by raking light. The sheen is matte. The surfaces show marks, stains and traces of prolonged domestic use. The structure remains solid. It fits naturally in wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic or eclectic interiors. It works as a living-room sideboard, a storage piece in a bedroom or a horizontal piece facing a long sofa. The dense carving turns it into a visual focus within a sober interior.DetailsDimensions: Length 200 cm – Width 42 cm – Height 85 cmStyle: Xinjiang provincial furnitureMaterials and techniques: Solid pine; mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, four doors carved in low relief, apron with carved meander border, circular iron latch-style pullsPlace of origin: Xinjiang, ChinaPeriod: Late Qing dynasty (circa 1900)Date of manufacture: Circa 1900Condition / Notes: Sound structure.
