Antique japanese single-door cabinet made of japanese cedar (cryptomeria japonica), dating from the late meiji period to the early taishō era, japan, circa 1890-1926.
this piece reflects the restrained and functional logic of japanese utilitarian furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tall and narrow in proportion, it was designed for the domestic storage of everyday objects, documents, textiles or household utensils while taking up very little floor space.
the structure is crafted in japanese cedar, a wood widely valued in japan for its lightness, stability and natural resistance to humidity. Inside, a single shelf creates a simple and practical arrangement, while the front door preserves an austere construction that reinforces the cabinet’s honest and vernacular character.
the surface has developed a deep dark patina, with visible wear along the edges, upper top and door frame. Rather than diminishing the piece, these traces of age emphasize its authenticity and give it a sculptural presence closely aligned with wabi-sabi sensibility.
the surviving paper label on the door is another notable detail, adding historical interest and strengthening the impression of a lived object. The simplicity of the wooden pull and the purity of the lines make this small cabinet especially appealing for contemporary interiors seeking texture, history and visual calm.
today it can be used as a small side cabinet, an auxiliary storage piece or a decorative accent in a bedroom, entrance hall, study or carefully curated living space.
