an exceptional work by the renowned contemporary artist juan muñoz, this print titled “furniture xiv” belongs to the furniture series and is signed and numbered 14/15.
the furniture series, developed throughout the 1990s, is essential for understanding the artist's artistic language. In it, he depicts various domestic objects, such as chairs, armchairs, lamps, and fireplaces, always appearing against an intense black background, isolated and in illogical arrangements. This black background eliminates any concrete and real reference to the space, generating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The presence of the furniture suggests human presence, but there is actually an absence of it, creating an interesting sense of tension. The theatricality of the composition is also striking; the objects seem placed on a stage, with completely dramatic lighting.
this work, of a silent and conceptual nature, transforms the everyday into something mysterious and unsettling, inviting reflection, as was typical of his work.
juan muñoz (madrid, 1953 - ibiza, 2001)
juan muñoz is considered one of the most important contemporary sculptors and installation artists of recent years. He gained international recognition in the mid-1980s with a series of sculptures that placed the human figure in architectural settings. His fame stems primarily from his ability to create a tension between illusion and reality, the contrasting acts of observing and receiving, and the isolation of the individual within a group or crowd. His work is characterized by creating almost theatrical settings, often featuring unsettling human figures (smiling, silent, or distorted), architectural elements, and spaces that suggest a certain narrative but never fully develop it.
