A striking example of early 20th-century historicist design, this substantial secretary bureau captures the architectural grandeur of the late Baroque period while benefiting from the refined craftsmanship of its later creation.
Executed in beautifully patinated solid oak, the piece radiates a warm, honey-toned richness that speaks to generations of careful preservation. Likely of North European or Scandinavian origin, its stately proportions and robust construction allow it to command attention in a library, study, or sophisticated living space with equal authority and grace.
The bureau features a classic slanted drop-front lid that opens to reveal a thoughtfully configured fitted interior, complete with small compartments and drawers intended for correspondence and writing implements.
When open, the lid provides a generous and sturdy writing surface. Below the desk portion, the façade is defined by three expansive, full-width drawers, each distinguished by a dramatic serpentine front. This undulating profile, a hallmark of the Baroque aesthetic, introduces a sense of fluid movement and sculptural depth that enlivens the substantial oak form.
The piece is further elevated by its original-style ornate brass hardware. Intricately cast escutcheons and bail handles serve as warm, shimmering accents against the wood's rich grain, drawing the eye across the façade.
Supported by robust, hand-carved bracket feet that echo the scrolling lines above, the secretary presents a grounded and authoritative silhouette, perfectly proportioned for modern living, with a total desk depth of 83 cm (32.68 in) when the drop-front is open. The desk area is 47.5 cm (18.70 in) deep, whereas the fold-out flap is 36 cm (14.17 in).
The fold out "escritoire" area is 74cm (29.13in) in height.
This secretaire offers a seamless blend of historical evocation and enduring functionality, its carefully preserved patina and excellent antique condition ensuring that it remains as practical and captivating today as it was when it first graced an early twentieth-century interior.
