It’s a classic character study with great light and texture, likely influenced by traditional Dutch paintings. One of the best parts about this piece is the original hardware on the back; it features the A.D. Shattuck patent keys dated 1883 and 1885, which were a high-end stretcher key used by professional artists in the late 1800s to maintain canvas tension.
