Mid to late 19th century American primitive "possum belly" handmade baker’s cabinet crafted from solid pine with a warm, natural patina. Features two deep, rounded 'possum belly" bins (originally designed to hold large quantities of flour and sugar), two utility drawers with divided compartments, and a glass-front hutch for spice or dry good storage. The unit is a two-piece construction, consisting of a hutch top and a bin-base bottom. While currently unattached for easier transport, existing holes indicate they were originally joined and can be permanently reattached.
The piece is in its original antique condition, showing character marks and surface wear consistent with many decades of functional use. Shows deep wood grain character, surface scarring and staining over a hundred years of use. Can be used as-is for a primitive, rustic aesthetic or serves as a good candidate for refinishing.
