A commanding and historically rich presentation piece, this oversized signed portrait of Colonel Sir Alexander Weston Jarvis captures the unmistakable presence of a distinguished British officer at the height of the Empire. Depicted in full dress uniform, Jarvis stands poised and self-assured, his finely tailored tunic adorned with intricate braiding, medals, and regimental detailing—an elegant visual testament to a life of service and distinction.
Colonel Jarvis served with the 3rd County of London Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) and saw action across some of the most defining conflicts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Matabele Rebellion, the Boer War, and the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War. This portrait, dated 1909 and bearing his signature in the lower left, offers a rare and personal connection to a seasoned officer whose career spanned pivotal moments in British military history.
The photograph itself is beautifully presented, mounted within a period matte featuring an ornate gold gilt border that enhances the warm sepia tones of the image. The substantial dark solid wood frame adds depth and presence, giving the piece a stately, museum-quality appearance ideal for display.
Generously scaled, the overall frame measures 15 inches high, 10.25 inches wide, and 9.25 inches deep, while the photograph itself measures 10.75 inches high by 6.25 inches wide. Its larger size and striking full-length composition make it an exceptional focal point—perfect for a study, library, or curated gallery wall. Good antique condition, the photo is a bit over exposed and there are black artifacts across part of the image - both of these elements appear original and occurred during film processing. Great aged presentation, please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A superb acquisition for collectors of British military history, Edwardian portraiture, or aristocratic memorabilia, this piece embodies heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of a bygone era.
