About the painting:
Jardin d'Hiver Series is Shizico Yi's latest collection, created in her winter studio with an expensive window view to the winter clouds while longing for the summer left behind. Reflecting on the vibrant days spent painting en plein air, she revisits the Dahlias Collection in her garden during the late summer.
This series is a tribute to those cherished moments, through painting, she transforms her studio into a winter garden—bringing summer night to life on canvas.
To Shizico, dahlias symbolise resilience and longevity. Their long blooming season, stretching from summer into the early winter chill, brings much-needed colour to the herbaceous border of her garden during the duller months.
In Jardin d’Haver, Shizico Yi deepens her exploration of impasto
Through thickly layered paint of Impasto, the heightened surface transforms her brushstrokes into sculptural gestures, giving the florals a tangible physical presence. By building the paint into textured relief, the works capture not only the colour of summer, but its energy and immediacy — held vividly on canvas.
Shizico associates the colour of yellow with healing and renewal. Here she layered yellow oil paint contracting with the blue dahlias , an extension of the clouds, creating a threshold between presence and memory, observation, emotion and the power of imagination.
