A striking signed modernist painting titled “Abstract Village” by noted Chinese-American artist Heshi Yu (born 1935), presented in an exceptional vintage Astral acrylic / lucite gallery frame.

Born in Shandong, China in 1935, Heshi Yu studied at the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University before continuing his education in Paris at l'École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1968, he relocated to New York, where he developed the distinctive abstract village and cityscape style for which he became known.

Yu’s work blends Eastern and Western artistic traditions, combining influences from Chinese ink painting and calligraphic linework with modernist geometric abstraction. His compositions are celebrated for their layered color fields, rhythmic linework, and serene architectural forms.

This work features a whimsical abstract village landscape rendered in layered shades of blue, lavender, turquoise, yellow, white, and red with delicate geometric detailing throughout. The composition has a strong mid-century modern and postwar modernist aesthetic with excellent decorative presence.

The artwork appears on a canvas-textured surface and is hand-signed “Yu” lower left. It is housed in a substantial vintage Astral acrylic / lucite frame with wood backing and original Astral Acrylic Frames label verso.
