This piece draws particular inspiration from Degas’ groundbreaking sculpture Little Dancer of Fourteen Years (La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans), modeled between 1878 and 1881. That work—originally executed in wax and famously incorporating real fabric and hair—challenged artistic conventions of its time with its unidealized, naturalistic portrayal of a young Paris Opera ballet student, Marie van Goethem.
