A powerful late work by Austrian painter Georg Herzig, distinguished by his exploration of intense chromatic fields and expressive materiality. By the 1990s, Herzig’s practice had evolved into a heightened emotional language in which color operates simultaneously as subject and structure — articulating states of tension, transformation, and inner energy.
Created in 1999, Untitled (Fire) captures this culmination with striking immediacy. Rather than depicting flame in literal terms, the composition evokes combustion through a dynamic interplay of incandescent reds, deep ambers, and smoldering dark tonalities. Layered pigment and gestural brushwork generate a sense of movement and heat, while vertical surges of color emerge from darker grounds, lending both depth and rhythmic intensity to the surface. The oil on panel technique enhances the density and tactile presence of the paint, resulting in a surface that feels at once visceral and elemental.
Monogrammed lower right and dated [19]99, this large-scale work stands as a compelling testament to Herzig’s late exploration of light, energy, and transformation — equally suited to a considered collection or as a commanding focal point within a contemporary interior.
