Antique low sideboard in pine wood, traditional chinese furniture with patinated finish originating from shanxi and dated circa 1920. Originates from shanxi, in northern china, from the early 20th century, where local pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, with fronts articulated in drawers and central doors.
in the houses of northern china, long low sideboards served as storage furniture and, through their horizontal scale, visually anchored the main room. The layer of light paint applied at origin has been worn by time, leaving a softened pinkish tone over the pine.
built in solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without nails. The front articulates four lateral drawers — two on each side — and two parallel central doors, all with circular iron latch-style pulls. The sides are carved in low relief with vegetal scrolls and the lower apron is shaped in a lobed arch.
the patina retains the original light tone with pinkish nuances of the worn paint, integrated into the pine grain. The sheen is matte. The surfaces show broad abrasions, small losses and traces of prolonged domestic use. The structure remains solid.
it fits naturally in wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic and eclectic interiors. It works as a horizontal sideboard in a generously proportioned living room, a long console in a wide entrance or an anchor piece in a dining room. Its length lets it visually anchor a full wall.
