Originates from Xinjiang, in western China, from the late 19th century, where local pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, with fronts covered in dense low-relief carving. In the rural houses of muslim Xinjiang, sideboards of considerable length served as collective storage furniture and as a structural visual piece in the main room. The density of the carving on the front documents the symbolic importance of the piece within the family trousseau.Built in solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without nails. The front articulates eight parallel doors with circular iron latch-style pulls, each resolved as a recessed panel carved in low relief with geometric lattices. The upper apron and the sides continue the carved language. The top finishes in protruding lobed ends and the piece rests on four exposed square-section legs. The patina retains the warm tone of aged pine, light and luminous, with well-defined carving. The sheen is matte. The surfaces show marks, stains and traces of prolonged domestic use. The structure remains solid and the original hardware is in place. It fits naturally in wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic or eclectic interiors. It works as a horizontal sideboard of considerable length capable of anchoring a full wall, a long console in a wide entrance or an anchor piece in a generously proportioned living room.DetailsDimensions: Length 245 cm – Width 42 cm – Height 85 cmStyle: Chinese western provincial furnitureMaterials and techniques: Solid pine; mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, eight doors carved in low relief with lattices, circular iron latch-style pulls, top with lobed endsPlace of origin: Xinjiang, ChinaPeriod: Late Qing dynasty (circa 1900)Date of manufacture: Circa 1900Condition / Notes: Sound structure.
