Japanese Buddhist sculpture carved from cedar wood, dating from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) or Muromachi period (1333-1573). The piece depicts a seated monk in traditional robes and is constructed using the "yosegi-zukuri" technique, involving hollowed-out blocks of wood joined with wooden pegs. The sculpture features traces of polychrome painting in a deep, dark tone with visible remains of gilding on the folds of the robe. The refined execution of the garments, characterized by deep and fluid drapery, is typical of the Kei school. The surface possesses an authentically weathered patina with natural wear that subtly reveals the wooden structure and construction seams. The sculpture is mounted on a modern, minimalist pedestal.
