Large covered pots with blue delftware decoration are among the most iconic silhouettes of european earthenware—sought after by collectors and decorators alike for three centuries.
a superb pair of covered earthenware pots with cobalt blue decoration on a white ground, in the grand delft tradition. Both pieces share the same baluster shape with canted corners, richly decorated with alternating floral panels of chrysanthemums, peonies, and foliage, separated by friezes of scrolling foliage, with a scrolling frieze at the base and a crown of medallions at the neck. The domed lids, topped with a plain blue knob, are also decorated with floral and landscape motifs.
please note: the two pots are not from the same factory. The first, slightly larger piece, bears on the reverse the mark of petrus regout & co, maastricht, made in holland — one of the largest dutch potteries, founded in 1836, specializing in the production of delft-style earthenware for european export. The second bears the printed mark of boch frères, la louvière, belgium, a manufacturer founded in 1767, a leading interpreter of the delft style in continental europe. The decorations are very similar, but the blues differ slightly in the light; the boch blue is slightly deeper. The heights differ by 2 cm. These small differences, imperceptible once the pair is displayed, do not detract from their decorative impact: placed on a sideboard or mantelpiece, they form a distinguished and striking ensemble.
