This wonderful, unique and amazing cast bronze abstract sculpture was created by well known artist Mary K. Seyfarth (American/Chicago b. 1947) who was educated at the University of Illinois where she obtained her MBA. She is currently active in her Chicago studio creating rather significant art, including large and mid-size indoor and outdoor sculptures, paintings and pottery works of all sizes. More importantly, her art has been exhibited in many public parks and institutions in the City of Chicago and beyond. Plus, her artwork has been exhibited in several galleries including Colin Fisher Studios in Cathedral City, CA and many private collections nationwide. A photo of the artist is included in the additional photos provided.
This sculpture was created using the lost wax method where the artist initially creates a plaster mold for each element and then poures liquid bronze to form each piece, during the year 1987, (nearly 40 years ago).
The sculpture measures 20” high X 11” long X 7” wide, and it is titled “ADVENTURES STAIRS”, it is extremely heavy so once placed it’s not likely to go anywhere. There are 25 asparagus-like pieces made from cast bronze or individual horsetail like elements on a staircase consisting of a total of 8 stairs.
In fact, what looks like asparagus spears on a staircase, is really something else as far as the artist is concerned. So to better understand the background, please read how and why the artist created this work of art in the first place.
You should be aware that this sculpture is the artist’s personal favorite after a lifetime of creating and it has remained in her personal collection until now.
Here is the artist’s back story about her creating this sculpture…
“As a young child growing up in Chicago, my family spent the end of each summer in Northern Wisconsin. A friend of my parents owned a camp for boys. There were these cabins that were high on a bluff over looking a lake. In order to get down to the lake, every one had to climb, up and down this long set of stairs.”
“And growing between each set of steps were bunches of horsetails or ancient grasses. While as an artist at the University of Illinois’ foundry, I cast in bronze my reflections of that time climbing up and down that long staircase.”
“This sculpture places individual horsetails on the steps, not between the stairs, but on each step. The individual horsetails climb each step like all of us "campers" did during those special times each summer. That’s of course why I titled it “Adventures Stairs”.
Aside from the photos of the sculpture there is a picture of the artist Mary K. Seyfarth in her studio.
