A highly decorative and historically significant map of paraguay and the rio de la plata region, published by willem and joan blaeu in amsterdam around 1642. This fine example originates from blaeu’s renowned atlas toonneel des aerdrycx, produced during the golden age of dutch cartography, when the blaeu firm dominated the european map trade with works of exceptional quality and visual appeal. The map depicts a vast and strategically important portion of south america, including paraguay, parts of brazil, tucumán (northern argentina), and the río de la plata basin. The andes mountains are dramatically rendered along the western edge in bold relief, contrasting with the intricate river systems and plains extending eastward. The paraná and paraguay rivers are prominently featured, reflecting their importance as colonial trade and exploration routes. A standout feature is the elaborate baroque cartouche in the upper right, richly adorned with floral elements and a cherubic figure, framing the title in latin. Below, a finely engraved compass rose adds further decorative balance to the composition. Blaeu’s original hand-coloring remains vibrant, with subtle tones enhancing borders, rivers, and topography without overpowering the engraving. Maps of this region are particularly sought after due to their connection to early colonial expansion and the development of south america under spanish influence. Blaeu’s interpretation reflects both geographical knowledge and artistic refinement, making it equally valuable as a historical document and as a striking decorative object. A refined and highly collectible map, ideal for a sophisticated interior, especially when framed in a museum-quality presentation or combined with other blaeu maps of the americas.
good for its age. Original central fold as issued. Light overall toning consistent with age. Minor wear and faint staining, mainly in the margins. Edges slightly irregular. Colors remain fresh and well-preserved. Please study image carefully. Framing: this piece presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with a wide warm ivory mat. A museum-style presentation enhances the rich cartouche and geographic detail. Particularly effective in a darker study or classic interior setting.
