This map represents one of the most desirable early European depictions of the western coastline of South America, focusing on the Viceroyalty of Peru during the height of Spanish colonial influence. The composition is visually striking and richly detailed. The Andes mountain range dominates the interior, rendered in dense pictorial relief typical of 17th-century cartography. The Pacific coastline is carefully delineated with numerous place names, ports, and colonial settlements, reflecting European knowledge of the region at the time. The ocean is animated with finely engraved Dutch ships under sail, a sea creature, and a large compass rose radiating elegantly across the lower right portion—hallmarks of Blaeu’s decorative style. The elaborate title cartouche in the upper left is executed in bold Baroque ornamentation, framing the title “Peru” in vivid color. The original hand-coloring remains vibrant, with subtle yet effective use of greens, yellows, and reds to distinguish regions and enhance the visual depth of the map. Produced during the golden age of Dutch cartography, the Blaeu firm was among the most influential map publishers of the 17th century. Their atlases were prized not only for their geographic content but also as luxury objects, often displayed in the homes of affluent collectors and scholars. Today, Blaeu maps remain highly sought after for their combination of historical importance and strong decorative appeal. A compelling and highly collectible example, ideal as a statement piece in a study, library, or refined interior. This map also pairs exceptionally well with other Blaeu maps of the Americas or Asia to create a cohesive and historically rich wall composition. : Good for its age. Original central fold as issued. Light overall toning consistent with age. Minor wear and faint staining in the margins. Edges slightly irregular. Colors remain strong and attractive. Please study image carefully. Framing: This piece performs exceptionally well in a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with a wide warm ivory mat. A museum-style presentation with generous margins enhances both the decorative cartouche and maritime elements. Ideal for a darker study interior or luxury setting.
