A set of four dining chairs designed by Kai Kristiansen represents one of the most recognizable designs of Danish mid-century modern furniture. Created around 1956–1957, the model quickly became one of Kristiansen’s most successful works and was even distributed in the early years of IKEA.
The chairs are crafted from teak wood, a material highly valued in Scandinavian design for its durability and warm, refined grain. The structure is carefully composed: the rear legs flow seamlessly into the backrest frame, while the gently angled and contoured back provides natural support. The result is a chair that feels visually light yet structurally well-balanced and durable.
The set of chairs has been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. The backrest and seat were reupholstered in high-quality brown-beige fabric made of recycled cotton, wool, and silk. The fabric boasts an interesting and original texture. Thanks to these treatments, chairs look stunning and will serve their new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear from everyday use.
The design clearly reflects the Scandinavian Modern style—minimal, functional, and focused on ergonomics. Every element serves a purpose, both structurally and visually, making the chairs attractive from every angle—an important quality for dining seating placed around a table.
What sets the chair apart is its balance between form and everyday usability. The backrest is shaped to follow the body, and the seat proportions make it comfortable even during long dinners or extended use. At the same time, the chairs remain relatively lightweight, which makes them practical in daily life, not just visually appealing.
Another key advantage is the timeless character of the design. The chair is not just a vintage trend piece but a true classic that fits naturally into both mid-century interiors and contemporary spaces. The teak wood develops a deeper tone over time, further enhancing its appeal.
Kai Kristiansen is regarded as one of the leading Danish designers of the post-war period. Educated under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he became known for combining craftsmanship with ergonomic thinking. His works, including the iconic Model 42, remain highly valued today.
