Antique Caucasian Fachralo Kazak Prayer Rug.
Size: 3'6" x 6'3"
Origin: Southwest Caucasus (Kazakh district – Fachralo type)
Date: Circa 1880–1900
Structure: Hand-knotted wool on wool, symmetrical (Ghiordes) knot'.
The clear mihrab (prayer niche) structure at the top
The stepped, architectural niche outline typical of Fachralo pieces
The use of multiple compartmentalized medallions within the field
The presence of symbolic geometric motifs (crosses, latch-hooks, S-forms)
The balanced open composition, not overly crowded
Fachralo Kazaks are known for combining bold geometry with prayer format, often featuring a mihrab and strong color contrasts.
A striking and well-balanced antique Caucasian Fachralo Kazak prayer rug, distinguished by its crisp geometry, architectural composition, and vivid natural color palette.
The field is organized around a stepped ivory-ground mihrab, creating a strong vertical orientation that defines the piece as a prayer rug. Within and below the niche, a sequence of bold, highly stylized medallions—in red, green, and indigo—are arranged along a central axis, each articulated with angular latch-hook devices and tribal symbols.
The surrounding field compartments are filled with geometric talismanic motifs, including crosses, rosettes, and small protective symbols—elements traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and the “evil eye”.
The palette is particularly successful and classic:
Soft ivory ground (highly desirable and difficult to find clean)
Deep indigo blues
Rich madder reds
Accents of green, yellow, and light blue
The borders are strong and well-defined, featuring:
A bold main border with angular, serrated leaf and geometric motifs
Multiple guard borders adding rhythm and precision
The drawing is clear and confident, reflecting a skilled village weaver, with excellent spacing and proportion—hallmarks of better Kazak work. Kazak rugs are prized for their bold geometric designs and powerful color contrasts.
Full pile throughout
Excellent clarity on the back → confirms good weave quality
Strong edges and ends
No visible restoration
This condition is exceptional for a true 19th-century Kazak prayer rug.
