Monumental Japanese oil painting attributed to Takahashi, with signature lower left and an original Japanese label on the reverse. The composition presents a compact group of figures that clearly refer to the visual language of Japanese haniwa terracotta funerary sculptures: stylised figures holding different musical instruments come together in a vivid, almost ritual-like scene. The title on the label is 奏, which can be translated as “ensemble,” “musical performance,” or “playing.”
Dimensions without frame: height 130.5 cm, width 97 cm, depth 3 cm. Dimensions with frame: height 148.5 cm, width 115 cm, depth 8 cm.
The oil paint is applied heavily in impasto, with pronounced palette-knife texture, built-up layers, and a strongly tactile surface. The palette is soft and earthy, with tones of blue, sand, ochre, and green, interrupted by a few warm red accents. Combined with the compact composition, this gives the work a quiet but convincing strength.
On the reverse is an original label bearing the inscription 五部作之三, meaning “number 3 from a series of five,” together with the title, the date Showa 60 (1985), and 六十号, referring to the 60-go format. The work can also be supplied with a silver-coloured frame if desired.
A characterful Japanese painting that feels at once sculptural, graphic, and atmospheric, and works particularly well as a statement piece in a restrained, eclectic, or architectural interior.
The painting shows normal, honest signs of age and use, consistent with the work and the period. This piece has an attribution mark,
