Dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period, this storage system combines historical function with a strikingly graphic appearance. The boxes are finished in a deep red-brown lacquer and feature black hand-painted symbols on the front, which were originally used to identify their contents or assignment.

Overall dimensions: height 34 cm, width 131.5 cm, depth 15 cm.

These boxes were originally used to store collapsible Japanese lanterns made of bamboo and paper. The sturdy wooden construction protected them from dust, moisture, and insects when not in use. The deep red bengara lacquer served not only a decorative purpose, but also helped protect the wood.

What makes this piece particularly special is that all four boxes have remained together with their original rack. Complete sets like this are difficult to find. Today, the ensemble works exceptionally well as a wall-mounted object with practical storage function. Two hanging loops are fitted on the back, allowing the rack to be easily mounted on the wall.

In a contemporary interior, this is a strong and unusual piece: at once wall decoration and storage furniture. Ideal for papers, mail, drawing tools, ribbons, cards, small textiles, studio supplies, or other small objects.
