A charming and highly authentic early 19th century English chest of drawers, dating to circa 1820–1840. This beautiful example features a classic two-over-two drawer configuration, raised on simple yet elegant turned ball feet, a hallmark of rural English craftsmanship.
Constructed with hand-cut dovetailed drawers and pine secondary wood, the chest reflects the honest, utilitarian construction methods of the period. The drawers retain their wooden knobs and open to reveal interiors with wonderful age and patina, further underscoring its early origins.
Maintains it original worn green paint surface (back). Early painted furniture has become increasingly sought after, not only for its visual appeal but for what it represents—an unaltered surface that has survived generations. In the 19th century, paint was often applied to protect softer woods from moisture and insects, and over time it has developed the rich, layered patina seen here. The variation in tone, areas of wear, and subtle glimpses of the wood beneath create a depth and authenticity that cannot be replicated.
The top, in natural wood, provides a warm contrast to the painted case and shows appropriate wear consistent with age and use.
A wonderfully versatile piece, ideal for use in a bedroom, entryway, or as a statement accent in a living space. This chest embodies the enduring appeal of English country furniture—simple, functional, and deeply characterful.
