Hermes Junks and Sampans, Silk Scarf 1991
Hermes, creator of exceptional scarves, pays homage to the reputation of silk through junks, central to the history of trade between Asia and the West and the Middle East: silk, porcelain, and tea were exchanged for ivory, spices, and gold, particularly between the 16th and 17th centuries. This was also the era of the great Chinese expeditions led under the Ming Dynasty, notably by Admiral Zheng He. It was only in the 19th century that Asian junks reached America by crossing the Pacific Ocean, like the Keying junk which departed from Hong Kong in 1846. It was also during this turbulent period of the Opium Wars that Chinese junks clashed with the English, French, and American fleets, with their all-metal ships.
