With our highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques proudly offers this exceptional antique dining room table. We are always excited to acquire antiques with unique characteristics which stand out amongst a marketplace already full of interesting and rare pieces. We consider our present offering to be among the finest and most desirable of its form. Antique dropleaf tables are incredibly useful, not just as dining tables, but also in hallways, between window systems, and against wall spaces which pose common design challenges. Quite often dropleaf tables are shown with the leaves folded downward while the table top is used to showcase rare items such as antique pottery or treenware. The timeless design and versatility these tables offer make them among the wisest investments one can make in their household interior.
This table is constructed from a wonderful selection of cherry lumber which is brilliantly figured and has a warm color that enriches the entire piece. Based on every observable detail we believe that this table was built for a southern farmhouse sometime during the earliest part of the 19th century. The most remarkable feature of this table are the four expertly fashioned spool turned legs. This design is typical in Southern country interiors with examples from Virginia and Kentucky being amongst the most notable. The subtle details and expertly turned proportions suggests that the table was constructed by a craftsman at the height of their abilities. Both dropleaf ends are supported from underneath by the original swiveling shuttle supports and hand forged iron hinges. Overall the table has remained in excellent condition having been well cared for throughout the past two centuries. The table measures 18 1/4” wide x 35 1/2” deep x 28 1/2” tall. When the leaves are locked up the table measures 41 1/4” wide.
